Mount Gilead grew up as a farming and crossroads town in southern Montgomery County, where NC 73 and NC 109 meet a few miles east of the Pee Dee River. Its brick downtown blocks are compact, and the town still reads as a working main street rather than a resort village.
Just south of town, Town Creek Indian Mound preserves a ceremonial center built by people of the Pee Dee culture roughly a thousand years ago. It is North Carolina's first state historic site and the most important archaeological landmark anywhere near the lake.

Mount Gilead is the closest town to Lake Tillery's eastern shoreline. Both of the lake's busiest public launches use Mount Gilead addresses: Swift Island Boat Landing on NC 24/27 and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission access at Lilly's Bridge, along with Lilly's Bridge Marina and the lake's main pontoon rental operation.
For eastern-shore owners, that means fuel, hardware, groceries, a pharmacy, and a short list of restaurants within a few minutes of the dock — and an easy crossing at the NC 24/27 bridge when a trip to Albemarle is needed.

Take a late breakfast or early lunch on Main Street, browse the shops, and head to the water: Swift Island and Lilly's Bridge are both a short drive, and a rented pontoon from the Lilly's Bridge area covers the northern half of the lake in an afternoon. Finish with a sunset in one of the eastern coves before the drive home.
