Things to Do
Paddling Lake Tillery
A cove-heavy reservoir wrapped in the Uwharries is close to ideal for a kayak — provided you paddle the edges, not the middle, and you know where the current lives.

Why here
A reservoir built for small boats
Tillery's shape does paddlers a favor. The main channel carries the boat traffic, and dozens of side coves branch off it — shallow, wooded, protected from wind, and largely empty even on a holiday weekend. You can put in, turn away from the channel, and be alone inside ten minutes.
The shoreline helps too. Hardwood ridges come down to the water on the east and north sides, so the visual experience is closer to a mountain lake than a suburban reservoir, and herons, ospreys, and eagles work the same coves you are paddling.
When
Timing the water
Paddle early. Piedmont wind builds through the morning and boat wake peaks midday, so the first two hours after sunrise are consistently the flattest and quietest water of the day. Evenings are second best, though you should be off the water well before dark.
Season-wise, April through October is comfortable in ordinary clothing. Spring brings the most floating debris after upstream rain; late fall is the most beautiful and the coldest, and cold-water paddling in November through March demands a wetsuit and a float plan regardless of air temperature.
Where to launch
Put-ins that work for a kayak
Any of the public ramps will work, but the small-boat experience differs. Lilly's Bridge on the north end puts you close to quiet upper-lake coves. The Swift Island area near NC 24/27 is convenient and busy — launch there early or on a weekday. Morrow Mountain State Park is the best all-around choice for a paddling day, with its own ramp, shoreline, picnic areas, and trails if you want to combine a paddle with a hike.
Marinas around the lake rent kayaks and paddleboards seasonally alongside pontoons; if you are visiting without gear, call ahead rather than assuming walk-up availability in July.

Safety
The current is the real hazard
This is a hydropower lake with generation at Tillery Dam to the south and the Badin tailrace to the north. Both can change flow with no visible warning and no relationship to the weather. Stay entirely away from the dam, the tailrace, and any posted restricted area — a kayak has no business anywhere near either.
Everything else is standard reservoir discipline: a life jacket you actually wear, a whistle, a light if you might be out at dusk, a phone in a dry bag, and a habit of crossing the main channel quickly and perpendicular rather than paddling along it.
- Wear the PFD — North Carolina requires one aboard for every paddler
- Cross the main channel fast and straight; never paddle its length
- Stay clear of Tillery Dam, the tailrace, and marked restricted zones
- Check the day's lake level and generation before launching
- Carry a whistle and a light; be visible to boats sitting low in the water
- In November–March treat cold water, not air temperature, as the risk
Questions
Frequently asked
Can you kayak on Lake Tillery?
Yes. The lake's many protected coves make it well suited to kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. Paddle the coves rather than the main channel, and launch early when the water is flattest.
Where can I launch a kayak on Lake Tillery?
Any public ramp works. Morrow Mountain State Park is the best all-around paddling base, Lilly's Bridge accesses quiet upper-lake coves, and the Swift Island area off NC 24/27 is convenient but busiest.
Are there kayak rentals at Lake Tillery?
Marinas and outfitters around the lake rent kayaks and paddleboards seasonally, usually alongside pontoon rentals. Availability is limited on summer weekends, so reserve ahead.
Is it safe to kayak on a hydropower lake?
Yes, away from the infrastructure. Generation at Tillery Dam and at the Badin tailrace upstream can change current without warning, so paddlers must stay well clear of both and of any posted restricted area.
